  • How to Get Rid of Weed Smell

Marijuana is sometimes referred to as “skunk weed” due to its pungent and persistent odor. Weed smell can permeate virtually every surface in your home, making it seemingly impossible to eliminate—but you can get rid of weed smell for good.

Marijuana is sometimes referred to as “skunk weed” due to its pungent and persistent odor. Weed smell can permeate virtually every surface in your home, making it seemingly impossible to eliminate—but you can get rid of weed smell for good.

Eliminating Weed Smell Safely and for Good

There are many solutions and things you can try to get rid of the weed odor in your home, but there is one method that completely gets rid of the pungent smell of marijuana safely, each and every time you use it: Biocide Systems Room Shocker, a chlorine dioxide, or Cl02 system.

    What Is Chlorine Dioxide?

Cl02 is a gas, as well as a strong oxidizing agent. When released into the air, Cl02 degrades quickly and, as it does, it releases oxygen, which permanently neutralizes odors. Also, when Cl02 degrades, it does so quickly and into a completely harmless saline solution.

Chlorine dioxide was previously only available for industrial applications because the only way to generate and release this gas was to do so on a large scale. In addition, there was no way to generate Cl02 on a small-scale, as-needed basis. Until now.

    Understanding What’s Behind Weed Smell

    Green crack marijuana strain

In learning about the substances responsible for that strong smell, you can better understand how to eliminate weed odor from your home. While each cannabis strain will have a different odor, all of them contain terpenes.

Terpenes are organic compounds. These compounds can be found everywhere in the plant world, but those found in the cannabis plant are highly concentrated. This is what causes the strong aroma. When marijuana burns, smoke is released. Smoke is an effective transporter of odors like terpenes, which themselves leave stubborn odor-causing residue.

What Are Some Other Safe Methods to Try?

Bad smell or odor from air conditioner

The following natural suggestions for getting rid of weed smell may work for you:

    • Opening the windows
    • Burning candles or incense
    • Using an essential oil diffuser
    • Cleaning residue from the surfaces in your home
    • Cooking spicy dishes or slightly burning popcorn or coffee beans
    • Sprinkling baking soda
    • Utilizing products made specifically for marijuana
    • Opening windows

This, along with turning on a fan to vent weed smell, is a conventional solution. That is, unless you are trying to do so in cooler temperatures or when it’s pouring rain outside. If you only smoke on warm and sunny days, letting fresh air in while blowing marijuana smoke odors out can definitely make your home feel fresher.

    Burning Candles or Incense

Beautiful burning candles on wooden table

Candles, such as those made of beeswax or soy wax, are considered to be a safe way to mask the scent of weed smoke because they don’t contain any chemicals. The same is true of incense, which is traditionally made of a combination of resins, wood, bark, and flowers. Burning candles and incense at the same time you smoke weed can help to reduce and mask the smell. However, they’ll only do so for as long as they burn.

    Essential Oils Diffuser

Aroma oil diffuser on table at home. Air freshener

Diffusing essential oils is another common chemical-free way to eliminate weed smell. Essential oils are extracted from flowers and plants and are highly concentrated. Diffusers gradually disperse essential oil molecules into the air. This can be done by dipping reed diffusers into the oils of your choice and placing them around the room.

Electric diffusers use water to disperse the scent in a subtle stream. Most of these can be left running until they’re empty, at which point they turn off by themselves. Despite the fact that these natural air fresheners release tiny molecules of scent into the air, they are often not enough to eliminate strong cannabis smoke smells on their own.

    Cleaning

Close-up on smiling housewife with yellow gloves cleaning table with cloth

Cleaning with natural products like white vinegar can control the amount of residue that settles onto surfaces and get rid of the smell of weed at the same time. Cleaning in itself is considered to be a good physical activity. This is especially true if you clean every time you smoke weed. Yet this is probably not something you want to do one or more times every day.

    Cooking

    Cooking spicy chili.

Certain foods and smells are effective at canceling out the smell of marijuana. A spicy chili has its own distinct odor, and the smell of slightly burned popcorn or coffee beans can quickly overcome any other scents that may be in the room. Of course, these can also be delicious snacks and drinks!

It’s important to be aware that food smells will permeate your space just as easily and thoroughly as the smell of marijuana. If you don’t like this, chances are that cooking won’t offer you the odor-eliminating solution you’re looking for.

    Marijuana-Specific Products

Bags, containers, smoke-odor-trapping devices, odor-neutralizing sprays, and air filters are all examples of products you can purchase that are made specifically for the purpose of removing weed smells from your home. • How to Get Rid of a Burnt Smell in Your House, Fast

The smell of burnt food like popcorn, grease, and other items is persistent enough to linger in your home for weeks. Before long, everything can smell like your kitchen. We’ll show you how to remove that smell for good.

    Remove the Sources

Woman holding a tray of burnt muffins

After burning food, the next logical thing to do is throw it out. Yet if it isn’t garbage day, your trash bin can quickly become the source of persistent burnt smell. So the first thing to do is seal up the bag with the burnt items in it and place it outdoors.

Your stovetop, cookware, and utensils can also hold that smoky odor, so remove these sources and use soap and warm water to clean everything thoroughly.

    Start Some Air Circulation

Woman opening window curtains at home in morning

Turning on a fan and opening the window for some fresh air can do wonders for ridding your home of the smell of burnt food. In fact, if temperatures allow, you can leave the windows open and fan going as you try the rest of our suggestions.

    Use Natural Deodorizers

    Jar of baking soda

Chances are you have some baking soda and white vinegar in your pantry. These are powerful and natural odor neutralizers. Place small bowls of baking soda around your kitchen and anywhere else that has that burnt smell. Warning: Don’t mix baking soda with vinegar unless you want a foamy, fizzy mess!

You can also sprinkle baking soda generously on carpeting and furniture, leave to sit for as many hours as possible, and then simply vacuum it away.

Place a few cups of vinegar with a cup of water in a pot and leave it to simmer on the stove. If the smell of vinegar is too strong, try adding rosemary and other fragrant herbs, a couple of cinnamon sticks, and slices of citrus fruit or lemon juice to a pot of water to simmer instead.

Coffee is another powerful natural air freshener. Just put beans or grounds into small bowls for placement in the kitchen.

    Purify Your Air

Air purifier on wooden floor in comfortable home.

If you already have an air purifier, you have an effective tool for helping rid your home of that strong smoke smell. Bring it as near to your kitchen as possible and leave it running until you can no longer notice that burnt odor hanging around.

    Launder Washable Items

Young woman putting clothes at washing machine while doing laundry

Kitchen towels, linens, curtains, and your clothing can absorb and release lingering odors into your home. For these and other items that smell suspicious, some time in the washing machine can be all you need for a fresher-smelling home.

For extra odor-fighting power, add a cup of hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to the water. Both are gentle whiteners, so you’ll end up with better-looking items, too.

    Diffuse

Aroma oil diffuser on table at home. Air freshener

An essential oils diffuser can be another great way to neutralize the smell of burnt food. Place several drops of lemon, orange, and lavender into your water-filled diffuser to enjoy natural and pleasant-smelling air for hours.

    Try Natural Fumigation Bombs

All of the aforementioned methods can leave your home smelling far better in a short amount of time. However, what do you do if the smell returns, won’t go away, or takes days to finally dissipate? A natural fumigation bomb containing chloride dioxide solution can be the answer.

Chlorine dioxide, or Cl02, contains negatively charged particles that seek out and destroy odor molecules. When this completely safe and harmless gas is released into the air, it enters even the most remote places, finding and absorbing these odors instantly.

Chlorine dioxide degrades quickly when released, leaving only saline solution behind. There used to be no way to contain and release Cl02 as needed, but, thanks to modern technology, it’s now possible to use this powerful and natural odor neutralizer in one or any room where burnt smells linger.

Room Shocker from Biocide Systems helps to completely neutralize odors in 1600 square feet of space. There’s no need to wonder how to get rid of burnt microwave smell in your house; just open, activate, and let Room Shocker do its work!

  • How to Get Rid of the Smell of Urine

Whether you have young children or are taking care of a loved one, urine smell may be something you’ve tried to get rid of in your home with little success. Thankfully, this common problem has many solutions.

Why Does Urine Have Such a Strong Smell?

Urine or pee and bubble in white flush bowl toilet in restroom

Urine smells strongly due to the uric acid, which is waste produced by the kidneys. When it is absorbed by a substance and remains for a period of time, bacteria can invade, causing the urine smell to intensify.

These aren’t the only causes of strong-smelling urine. Some foods can cause a stronger smell. For example, asparagus is well known as an intensifier of urine smell. Pharmaceutical products, as well as vitamins and other supplements, can also contribute to urine with a stronger smell.

Certain medical conditions, such as cystitis, metabolic disorder, or diabetes can also cause a person to have stronger-smelling urine.

    Clean Up Accidents Immediately

cleaning Toilet seat by a wet wipe with spray

It may seem obvious, but before trying any method to get rid of pee smell, it’s important to eliminate as much as you possibly can. Because urine is a liquid, it can penetrate various hard and soft surfaces very quickly.

As soon as you know that an accident has occurred, use paper towels or disposable rags to absorb the standing liquid. Reusable rags can also work. Once everything has been absorbed, place soiled paper towels or disposable rags in a single bag and place outside.

If you’re using reusable rags, these can also be placed in their own bag and sealed until washing. This will reduce the amount of odor released into your home while you go through the steps below.

Kitty litter is also a great way to both soak up liquid and remove odors. Just sprinkle liberally over the affected area and scoop into a bag.

    Sanitize

    Disposable hand sanitizer disinfectant wipes

Disposable disinfecting wipes will both sanitize the area and eliminate urine odor. Use these after cleaning. You can also run a steam cleaner over the area to kill bacteria.

    Treat

Chemical free home cleaner products concept.

Drying and sanitizing the area are both very effective first steps but, in order to eliminate urine odor, the area must be thoroughly treated. There are several ways to accomplish this.

    Vinegar and Water

Mix a 1:1 solution of distilled white vinegar or cleaning vinegar with water in a spray bottle. Spray over the affected area and allow to sit for 20 minutes. Then wipe or blot with a paper towel or rag. Repeat these steps until the odor and any staining is gone.

    Baking Soda Solution

Baking soda, peroxide, and dish detergent can make a powerful solution for eliminating urine stains and odors. Mix a cup of hydrogen peroxide with two drops of dish detergent and three tablespoons of baking soda, put into a spray bottle, and shake to mix well.

Spray the solution on the affected area and allow to sit for up to 20 minutes before scrubbing the area, repeating if necessary.

    Baking Soda by Itself

If you’re treating urine smell on carpeting or upholstery, you can sprinkle baking soda on the surface and leave it to sit for as long as possible. Then vacuum the spot. You can repeat this as many times as you like until the odor is gone.

    Shampooer

Carpet and upholstery shampooers offer a very effective means of eliminating urine smells. The machine can be passed over the affected area multiple times to remove all of the odor-causing liquid from furniture, carpeting, and even mattresses.

    Borax and Washing Soda

Clothing and bedding affected by urine staining and odors can be washed in warm water with laundry detergent, borax, and washing soda. Borax will help to break down the urine, while washing soda helps remove the urine from fabrics and gives materials a clean scent. A cup of vinegar will offer more odor-busting power and also act as a mild brightener.

    Enzymatic Products

Enzymatic cleaners work by attaching themselves to uric acid, breaking it down and then absorbing any remaining odor and bacteria that cause it. Simply spray cleaner onto and around the spot and wipe to remove.

Eliminating Urine Smell from the Air

A woman cleans a bathroom toilet with a scrub brush

Even though you may have been able to get rid of the urine smell in your carpet, bedding, or another area, the smell can still linger in your home. So how can you remove it?

    Essential Oils

Many essential oils can help freshen the air in your home. Lavender, orange, and lemon used alone or as a blend are just a few of many oils that can eliminate urine smell from the air in your home.

    Odor-Eliminating Spray

There are also several sprays on the market that can remove urine smell from the air. Some products are of medical grade and can be more powerful than consumer products to remove persistent urine odors from the air.

All of the above can effectively remove the urine odor from surfaces and the air in your home, but you may have to try more than one and repeat the steps many times until the smell is gone.

    Chlorine Dioxide (Cl02)

Cl02, or chlorine dioxide, is a harmless gas that can be used to get rid of lingering smells safely. How does this occur? Cl02 molecules remove electrons from urine molecules because of their opposing electrical charge. When chlorine dioxide meets air, it reacts with oxygen and destroys odor-causing molecules.

Cl02 has been a very popular way to deodorize very large areas like factories and warehouses. This is because of its release method. Until now, there was only one way to release this gas—all at once in a very large amount, simply because its release could not be controlled.

    Eliminate Urine Smell Forever

    Home deodorizer bundle-4-pack

Biocide Systems has researched and developed a chlorine dioxide product that you can use right in your own home to get rid of urine smell forever the first time you use it.

Room Shocker puts all the power of chlorine dioxide in your hands. This product is not an air freshener; it is a proven, safe, and effective way to eliminate urine odors for good.

Once activated, Room Shocker gets to work right away. Cl02 molecules are released and penetrate every surface and corner to seek out and destroy odor molecules.

You may wonder about the safety of releasing this gas into your home. You’ll be happy to know that once it’s done its work, chlorine dioxide gas degrades into saline solution, which is completely harmless to you, your family, and your belongings.

Now you can get the power of Cl02 to remove urine smells from multiple rooms in your home. Our Home Cleanup Bundle 4-Pack gives you four rooms-worth of odor eliminating power! • How to Get Rid of Dog Pee Smell

Every dog owner will inevitably find themselves cleaning up and removing urine from a crate, carpet, or hard flooring. What can be done if that smell just won’t go away? We’ve found a few ways to neutralize and get rid of that smell for good.

Why Is Dog Urine So Strong Smelling, and Why Do Dogs Pee on Objects?

Several puppy diapers on the wooden floor of the apartment

Dogs have been using their urine as a means of communication for millennia. Dog urine contains pheromones, which give it a strong smell. Their urine also contains scents and chemicals that communicate a whole host of information to other dogs. A dog’s urine can communicate all of the following information and more to other dogs and animals:

    • The boundaries of their territory
    • How they were feeling at the time they urinated
    • Their age
    • Their mating availability
    • Overall health

This information, combined with the fact that your dog’s brain is specifically adapted to process it, is why they are so interested in making their own scent marks and smelling the scent marks of other dogs.

Why You Need to Remove Dog Pee Smell Right Away

A woman wiping piss on a puppy off modern water resistant vinyl panels

Not cleaning or eliminating the smell of dog urine is a bad idea for two reasons. First, the longer dog pee sits, the stronger-smelling it will get. The bacteria in dog urine create ammonia. As bacteria multiply, so will that foul odor.

Second, if your dog urinates in a specific area and it’s left there, the smell will be more difficult to remove, and this will cause your dog to return to that area and urinate time and again.

The Best Ways to Remove Urine Smell

Hand cleaning surface of mattress on bed with brush and baking soda

The methods for removing the smell of dog pee will differ for recent and previous accidents, as well as for the type of surface you are removing the smell from.

    For Fresh Spots

Whether your dog has just urinated on a soft or hard surface, follow these steps:

    1. Use a paper towel or absorbent rag to soak up the urine.
    2. Soak a second towel with straight hydrogen peroxide, or a cleaning product that contains it.
    3. Wait 15 minutes, and then use a third towel to soak up the moisture.
    4. Treat the area with an enzymatic cleaner, leaving it to sit for 15 minutes before blotting completely dry.

*Note: hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching and brightening agent. If you are removing urine from a colored surface, test in an inconspicuous area first. If in doubt, a wet/dry or steam cleaner can help remove urine and neutralize odors.

    For Old/Dry Spots

An older urine spot will usually have an odor and stain. For these types of areas, either of the following solutions may be effective:

You can apply an enzymatic cleaner to the spot, leave it to sit for the recommended time, and remove with a dry cloth, repeating as necessary.

You can also mix cleaning vinegar and cool water and spray it onto the spot, leaving it to sit overnight. Then use a sponge or cloth dipped in warm water to remove.

Adorable puppy near puddle on rug at home

    Soft Surfaces

A wet/dry pet carpet cleaner can accomplish two things at once, removing excess moisture from fresh spots and any upholstery or carpet stains from dry spots.

If the odor remains, sprinkle baking soda over the area and leave overnight before vacuuming the next day. Dog beds, rugs, and other washable items with urine stains and odor should be pre-treated with stain remover, and then washed in hot water with a cup of peroxide.

    Hard Surfaces

Vinegar and warm water can be all that’s needed to remove the smell of dog urine from hardwood and other hard flooring. Simply mix equal parts and apply. Then scrub gently in a circular motion, rinse with warm water, and completely dry with a towel.

    Items to Consider

Yellow fresh urine stain from baby, kid, children, adult people or pet. Removing dirt.

You may need to repeat the above methods several times before the scent and stain are completely eliminated. Although frequent urination may be normal for your dog, regular vet visits will rule out any underlying conditions and ensure they stay healthy.

Is There Any Dog Pee Removal Method That Works the First Time, Forever?

    Liquid Shocker™ ClO2 Odor Eliminator

There are many methods for destroying odor-causing bacteria and removing pee stains from surfaces. There is another natural way to get rid of the smell of dog urine odor in your home: chlorine dioxide, or Cl02.

Once released into the air, Cl02 gas will destroy odors at the molecular level. While its name may sound threatening, once chlorine dioxide gas comes into contact with oxygen, it degrades rapidly into harmless saline solution.

Has Chlorine Dioxide Always Been Used to Eliminate Odors?

Yes and no; historically, chlorine dioxide was only used in industrial settings. So, for example, if a warehouse or factory needed to be cleaned of unwanted odor, it would be released into the entire area at once.

Until now, the only available way to use it for odor removal was to release large amounts simultaneously because there wasn’t a way to control its release.

However, you can now release chlorine dioxide when and where it’s needed: with Pet Odor Eliminators from Biocide Systems. These products are small enough to fit into your hand. Once you activate them, they have enough power to eliminate dog urine smell from any room, the first time, and for good.

If you’re ready to rid your home of dog urine smell, chlorine dioxide is your one-stop solution. Visit our website to view our lines of pet odor eliminators and learn more about them.

  • How to Get Rid of Musty Smells in Your Home

The combination of stale air and darkness create the perfect conditions for mold and mildew to grow. This growth is what can cause a musty smell in your home—something that can seem impossible to get rid of. If you’re dealing with a musty house smell, there are several ways to get rid of it.

Find the Source of Musty Smells

Young man hold hose in hand. Bad smell. Stinks. Handyman suffer from it. Opened toolbox and piece of pipe on floor.

Before you try any method of getting rid of the musty smell in your home, you must first find out what’s causing it. Water entering your home from a pipe or roof leak can cause the mold and mildew growth that results in musty smells. However, not allowing air to circulate in certain areas like closets can also lead to that musty odor.

That being said, it’s important to check your home for moisture and leaks. Follow your nose and feel carpets and clothing for dampness. Check ceilings, kitchen and bathroom pipes, and around water heaters and windows for water stains or leaks. You’ll also want to check your attic and basement for moisture, as these can also be the source of musty smells in your home.

    Are Musty Smells Dangerous?

Woman looking at mold on wall

A musty smell on its own is not dangerous; it’s what’s causing the smell that can pose a threat to your health. Both mildew and mold can cause musty smells.

Mildew is a type of white or gray fungi that appears powdery or dry. It typically has a flat surface and sits on top of window sills and grout, producing a mild musty smell.

Mold, however, can produce a strong and more prevalent musty smell. This is due to the microbial volatile organic compounds, or MVOCs, that mold produces during growth. Mold is easy to spot because of its raised and slimy or fuzzy surface, and green, blue, red, or black color.

    Mold and Mildew Removal Measures

While mildew is a type of surface mold that can be easily removed, mold is a different story. It penetrates porous surfaces like drywall and destroys them. If it’s not completely eliminated, it can return time and again. Breathing in certain types of mold can cause mild to moderate irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes, causing headaches, sore throat, and coughing.

Black mold spores can cause serious hormone, immune, and nervous system problems that can result in depression, memory loss, and life-threatening conditions. As a result, the EPA recommends wearing an N-95 respirator with gloves and goggles as minimum protection if the affected area is less than 10 square feet.1 If you find an area of black mold larger than 10 square feet, professional mold remediation is the safest option.

How to Remove the Musty Smell from Various Areas

Dirt on the floor, stains on the walls, and corners of bathroom tiles white.

For mildew and non-black molds that cover small areas, such as a closet or room, you can try any one of these methods or combine them.

Turn Off HVAC Systems and Seal Vents

The first thing to do is to turn off any HVAC system you may have in your home and seal the vents. This will prevent mold spores from entering your system and recirculating after cleaning.

    Remove Moisture-Filled Items from Rooms

Eliminating moisture can be done in a number of ways. If a towel or other items are causing the smell, place them in a trash bag, seal, and then remove the bag from the room.

You can also remove moisture by turning on the heat in your home or by purchasing a dehumidifier to lower humidity levels and eliminate musty smells. A wet/dry vacuum can pull water out of saturated areas.

    Circulate the Air

    Woman looking through window

Opening windows and doors and bringing in a fan to encourage airflow can help you get rid of a musty smell in basements and attics. You can also turn on ventilation fans in the bathroom and kitchen to keep fresh air moving out of these rooms.

Treat, Vacuum, and Shampoo Carpets and Upholstery

Baking soda makes a great pre-shampoo treatment for soft surfaces like carpets. Sprinkle generously and allow to sit for several minutes before vacuuming. Then use a carpet and upholstery shampooer or hire a professional cleaning company to conduct a deep-clean.

    Upset pH Balance

Both mold and mildew thrive at a certain level of acidity. Cleaning with white vinegar alters the pH and kills fungi as it deodorizes. Apply it to affected surfaces and allow it to sit for a few minutes, and then scrub with water and soap.

    Use Lemon Peels and Charcoal

    Boiling lemon peels in saucepan.

Using odor absorbers can help remove musty smells from the air.  Activated charcoal is a way to absorb odors in small spaces. Lemon peels are effective deodorizers. Simply boil the peels until you smell a lemony scent and place mixture in spray bottles.

You can try using the charcoal or spraying the lemon mixture to freshen up the room. However, unless the source of the mildew or mold is also completely removed, the musty smells will return. Ensure that any leaks are fixed, mold is completely eliminated, or damaged drywall is replaced.

A Safe Way to Remove Musty Smells Forever

    Home deodorizer bundle-4 pack

Sometimes, you can remove all of the causes of moisture from your home and still have a musty odor. If your home is still smelling musty, there is a way to safely remove it for good.

Chlorine dioxide, or Cl02, is a gas that, when released into the air, enters every surface and corner to eliminate odors like musty smells. Once it reacts with oxygen, Cl02 degrades quickly into a harmless saline solution.

This gas used to be used exclusively in industrial situations, as there was no way to control it. The gas would simply be released into a large area to do its job. Today, thanks to research and innovation by Biocide Systems, you can now get all of the odor-busting power of chlorine dioxide you need when you need it, right in your home.

The economical Home Cleanup Bundle 4-Pack contains enough chlorine dioxide musty-smell-busting power to cover 1600 square feet. Simply open and activate the container, place it in the affected area, and leave it to work. In 4 to 24 hours, you can return to a fresh-smelling home that’s completely free of any musty smell.

How does the Home Cleanup Bundle do it? Think of it as a safe fumigation bomb. As soon as the product is activated, it reaches every single surface in every nook, cranny, and corner, finding and eliminating musty odor molecules.

Why do so many homeowners choose The Home Cleanup Bundle? Because it is 100% effective, safe, and non-toxic to their pets, children, and the environment. Why live with musty odors? Order your Home Cleanup Bundle from Biocide Systems today!

  • How to Get Rid of Smoke Smell in a Car

Of all of the unpleasant odors that can enter your car, cigarette smoke can be the most persistent. Cigarette  smoke settles on hard surfaces and also penetrates soft surfaces so deeply that it can seem impossible to eliminate. Trying these solutions will help you refresh your car’s interior.

Step 1. Remove Anything That Holds Cigarette Smoke Smell

Man holding carton container near blue trash bag in car

Because cigarette smoke settles on all surfaces, it’s important to get rid of anything in your vehicle that’s removable. Trash, rubber, and carpeted mats and other removable items you may be storing in your vehicle, such as windshield washer fluid containers and snow brushes, should be removed.

Don’t Forget the Glove Box and Trunk

You may not think that cigarette smoke can invade the items in your glove box, but all it takes is a quick sniff of these items to know this isn’t the case.

Go through glove box items, discarding what you don’t need, and set the rest aside, preferably in the fresh air and sunshine to deodorize. Use a microfiber cloth that’s been dampened with soapy water or cleaning vinegar to wipe down your glove box.

Remove all items from your trunk, discarding any items that are no longer needed. Then sprinkle baking soda on the surface and allow it to sit for up to 20 minutes before vacuuming.

Treating Floor Mats for Smoke Smell

Eliminate the smell of smoke on rubber mats by vacuuming and then steaming them. Baking soda is a great odor eliminator for fabric surfaces. If your mats have carpeting on them, sprinkle baking soda over the surface, allow it to sit for up to 20 minutes, and vacuum.

Step 2. Vacuum and Clean Floors and Soft Surfaces

Man using car vacuum cleaner to tidy car.

Because even dirt can hold the smell of cigarette smoke, it’s important to vacuum all the soft surfaces in your vehicle. Do this before the next step, as vacuuming can disperse dust and other particles around your vehicle’s interior.

Soft surfaces include carpeting on floors, all sides of seats, and the fabric located on the roof. Smoke travels upward, so the roof may be holding more smoke smell than most other soft surfaces!

Sprinkle seats and carpets with baking soda and vacuum after 20 minutes. For the roof, a steam cleaner may be best to evict that smoke smell quickly. Upholstery cleaners are also specially formulated to deodorize and clean soft fabrics.

    If You Have Leather Seats

Vehicles with leather seats can be effectively cleaned and deodorized with a leather cleaner and conditioning product.

Step 3. Vacuum and Wipe All Hard Surfaces

cleaning the interior of the car with a microfiber cloth

Hard surfaces to be vacuumed and wiped include the dashboard, cupholders, steering wheel, gear shift, and even the plastic trim around windows and doors.

Use a commercial surface cleaner to wipe or make your own cleaning solution with ¼ cup vinegar, ½ teaspoon liquid dish soap, and 2 cups of water. Shake and spray. You can allow the mixture to sit before wiping with a clean, slightly damp cloth.

Window surfaces can also hold the smell of cigarette smoke, so be sure to spray with window cleaner and wipe with a clean, dry cloth until all streaks are gone.

Step 4. Consider Your Air Filter

Clean and dirty cabin pollen air filter for a car

Every vehicle has an air filter located inside the cabin that filters dirt and odors. This filter can be the cause of persistent smoke smell. The exact location of the cabin air filter may be different for every vehicle, so it’s best to consult your owner’s manual. Be prepared to be surprised when you see just how dirty this filter is!

Step 5. Get Smoke Smell Out of Your Air Vents

Man smoking a cigarette in a car

Replacing the cabin air filter in your vehicle can do a lot to eliminate smoke smell, but you can also deodorize your entire air system. How? First, find the air intake by consulting your owner’s manual. Then turn on your ignition and turn the dials to the coolest temperature at the highest fan speed.

Open all windows and spray a deodorizing solution directly into the air intake. This solution can be cleaning vinegar and water, a deodorizer spray made specifically for vehicles, and even steam from your steam cleaner.

After spraying your solution into the air intake, turn off your ignition and allow your vehicle to sit with windows open for a few minutes.

Ensuring you’ve completed all of the above steps will help you clean your car and get rid of cigarette smoke smell.

Other Tips for Removing Smoke Smell

    Fresh orange peels on wood

There are many other products that can be effective at removing the smell of cigarette smoke.

Cat litter, charcoal, and baking soda are all effective odor neutralizers. Fill a bowl with one of these products and leave in your vehicle for 24 to 48 hours.

Citrus peels can also be very effective at eliminating smoke smell. Leave fresh peels from grapefruit, lime, or lemon in your vehicle and remove them after 48 hours. Air fresheners and coffee grounds can also temporarily remove smoke odor.

  • How to Finally Get Rid of That Dog Smell!

Woman using laptop smelling something stinky and disgusting, intolerable smell, holding breath with fingers on nose.

Living with a dog usually means also living with their smell. While this may not seem like a problem, unpleasant odors can be absorbed into carpeting, floors, and furniture, causing your home to hold on to that dog smell. However, there are many things dog owners can do to get rid of it; here’s how.

    What Is Dog Smell?

Cute dog standing in bathtub waiting to be washed

“Dog smell” refers to more than one odor. Every dog’s smell is different and unique, and higher body temperatures from running around or being in the heat can result in a stronger smell. Because dogs sweat through their foot pads, these odors can also be left on your flooring.

Dogs tend to be attracted to—and roll in—some of the stinkiest things on earth, including poop from other animals. This can also be a source of dog smell, as can altered body odor from what they eat.

Being in heat can also have a lot to do with dog smell being in your home. While it’s normal for female dogs to smell differently when in heat, these changes can cause pretty bad smells year-round when they get into your furnishings.

These are just a few of many reasons for dreaded “dog smell.” So what can you do to get rid of it?

Ways to Get Rid of Dog Smell

Sleep dog covering her nose with her paw

How many ways are there to get rid of dog smell? More than a few; from bathing and baking soda to steam and vinegar, all of these can help you eliminate dog smell from your home.

    Give Them a Bath

Sad wet spaniel in the bathroom while washing

Bathing your dog can eliminate a lot of odors that like to cling to their bodies. It’s easy to tell when your dog needs a bath because they will smell like it! It might not be so easy to get them into the tub, however!

If you do, use a mild shampoo made for dogs, and ensure they’re completely dry to avoid creating a breeding ground for odor-emanating yeast and mold. Regular brushing will keep their skin and fur clean and healthy, too.

    Neutralize with Baking Soda

You may have placed some baking soda in the refrigerator to absorb odors, but it also works when placed in bowls that are set around your home. You can also sprinkle baking soda onto soft surfaces like furniture and carpeting and leave it to sit for several hours. Just vacuum to remove.

    Get Steamed

    Sofa cleaning

Steam cleaning is a great way to kill odor-causing bacteria and germs all at the same time. A carpet steamer and some solution can be enough to pull dog smell out of carpeting, hard floors, and furniture. Have the steamer but no solution? White or apple cider vinegar and water make a great odor-fighting team.

    Wash Their Stuff

If your dog is spoiled with toys, a cushy bed, and other necessities that are washable, throwing them into the laundry with some unscented, natural laundry detergent can do a lot to improve the smell in your home and get rid of doggy smell. Washing your dog’s bedding and other items in hot water will kill odor-causing bacteria.

    Freshen the Air

Cute dog near open window at home

It’s a good idea to open the windows and allow for some air flow to help send doggy odors packing. You can also mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle while the windows are open, and shake well before spraying as many hard and soft surfaces as possible.

Vinegar and water make an effective chemical-free cleaning and deodorizing solution that can be used anywhere in your home, including on floors to remove unwanted house smells. Changing out furnace or air purifier air filters can also rid your home of odor.

Essential oils like lavender can give your home a chemical-free scent, but be sure to ask your vet before using them. These are highly concentrated oils that can have potential negative effects on your dog’s sensitive system.

    Use Chlorine Dioxide

Any of the above methods can be effective at removing dog odors from your home, but you may have found yourself having to try them again and again in order to keep dog smell at bay.

Chlorine dioxide (Cl02) is a gas. When released into the air, Cl02 reacts with oxygen and degrades quickly into harmless saline solution. Yet that’s not all; when chlorine dioxide gas hits the air, it obliterates every odor for good.

Industrial cleaning services have used Cl02 to eliminate odors in factories, but the amount of gas released each time wasn’t able to be controlled. Fortunately, innovation has provided a way to make your home smell better once and for all with Cl02 whenever you need it.

DoggiCLEEN from Biocide Systems is great news for any pet parent because it’s completely safe for your dog. So safe, in fact, that it can be sprayed directly onto your dog’s hair.

How does this amazing product work? The secret is in the molecules; chlorine dioxide molecules have an opposing electrical charge. This allows them to remove the electrons from dog smell molecules. Then, once Cl02 reacts with oxygen, those electrons—along with the odor—are destroyed.

  • How to Get Rid of Mildew Smell

The unmistakable smell of mildew can seem to come out of nowhere, permeating virtually every surface. Although it may seem impossible to get rid of, the cause and the smell of mildew are both easily removed from your home.

Why Does a Home Smell Musty?

Removing mold stains from the mattress. Hand holds a sponge.

There are many causes of musty or mildew smell. Sudden increases in temperature, condensation, cooler temperatures, darkness, and excess moisture can all provide this precursor to mold to thrive.

In places where moisture is trapped during cooler temperatures, sudden warmth can cause it to be released into the air, leading to mildew growth. Places where moist air is generated without proper ventilation, such as the bathroom, provide the ideal humidity level for mildew growth.

When temperatures drop, moisture takes far longer to evaporate. The longer evaporation takes, the more fuel mildew receives. Areas that don’t receive enough or any sunlight are ideal places for mildew to grow and spread, and when excess moisture is also present, exponential growth—and the strong smell of mildew—will be the result.

    Mold vs. Mildew

Moist mold and fungus in window and frame

Mold and mildew are types of fungi. Mildew lives on surfaces and is flat, light, and powdery in appearance. If mildew goes unremoved, it’ll continue to grow and eventually become mold, which has a dark, lumpy, and slimy appearance.

Mold is far more invasive than mildew, able to penetrate hard surfaces like walls and wood, causing structural damage, not to mention making removal nearly impossible.

How Mildew and Mold Affect Your Health

Shocked woman looking at mold on wall

Both mildew and mold propagate by releasing spores into the air, which happens when they’re disturbed in some way. Even just walking by an area where these fungi are growing is enough to disturb and release spores, which can settle onto every surface in your home.

When released, mold spores are easily inhaled. This can cause many symptoms, from coughing and sneezing to dizziness and headaches. Mold illness is a very real and very serious condition that can cause numerous health problems, including fatigue, nausea, brain fog, and joint and muscle pain, to name a few.

    How to Remove Mildew Smell

Removing mold and mildew from tile

In addition to the bathroom, check places like the attic and basement, as well as any hidden areas where mildew may be thriving, such as in the back of a closet. You’ll also want to check for and address any cracks, holes, or misplaced shingles that may be allowing water to enter your home.

Once you’ve addressed these issues, it’s time to get rid of mildew. This can be accomplished with:

    • Bleach
    • White vinegar
    • Moisture removal
    • Increasing light and air
    • Chlorine dioxide

    Bleach

A bleach solution of one gallon warm water to one cup of bleach can kill mildew on contact when applied to grout, tile, and shower curtains. Wearing rubber gloves, mix and apply the solution in a well-ventilated area. Use a toothbrush dipped in the solution to scrub the affected area, and then wipe clean with a wet sponge. Repeat as necessary.

    White Vinegar

The pH level of vinegar makes it an effective mildew killer; you may have discovered this when removing mildew odor from your washing machine. Cleaning vinegar is a more concentrated form, which can kill mildew even more quickly.

Either of these can be applied by pouring over the mildew (using a spray bottle can disturb and release spores), and leaving it on the affected surface for several hours before cleaning with soap, warm water, and a clean cloth.

    Moisture Removal

When you remove moisture from an area, you are essentially “starving” mildew and preventing future mildew growth. Avoid running hot water for too long and instead, run a humidifier in musty-smelling areas, and limit the running time of air conditioning or HVAC systems. Ensuring bathroom surfaces are completely dry after use can also effectively eliminate a mildew problem.

    Increasing Light and Air

Exposing musty-smelling areas to sunlight and fresh air can kill existing mildew and prevent new growth. However, you’ll want to ensure that you’ve cleaned any visible mildew first to limit the spread of spores.

    Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2)

Chlorine dioxide is a gas that, when released into the air, reacts with oxygen. Completely safe in small doses, chlorine dioxide degrades quickly once released, leaving only harmless saline solution behind and destroying the existence and smell of mildew permanently. The only issue used to be that ClO2 could only be used in large-scale applications because there was no means of controlling how much of the gas could be generated at one time. Not anymore.

  • How to Get Rid of a Fishy Smell on Your Dog

While we love our pets, when they get a bad odor or fishy smell they can be hard to live with. There are many reasons your canine friend might smell a little fishy, but there are steps you can take to eliminate the fishy smell from your pet, your home, and your vehicle. This guide on how to get rid of a fishy smell on your dog is a breath of fresh air for pet owners.

What Makes Your Dog Smell Like Fish?

    dog eating a fish

So, where is that fishy smell coming from? Sometimes the reason is obvious, and sometimes a trip to the vet might be in order. Some of the reasons your dog might smell like fish include:

    • An actual fish or dead animal was involved. Many dogs are delighted to roll on a carcass and carry this intriguing perfume around with them. Rotten fish smells can come from a trip to the shore, walks through a wetland, or something as small as the remains of a frog or bird on the sidewalk.
    • Dog breath or bad teeth. Bad breath might mean your dog’s teeth need cleaning or other important pet dental care is overdue. Periodontal disease is common in some dog breeds. If the fish smell comes from your dog’s mouth, their licking and carrying toys will spread the smell around your home as well.
    • Impacted anal glands. All dogs have anal glands which release a potent scent marker. Sometimes these become clogged, and need to be “expressed” or released by a veterinarian or professional dog groomer. The smell of impacted anal glands can be fishy and the stinky secretion is hard to remove from fabrics, carpets, and vehicle seats.
    • An undiagnosed medical condition. If you can’t easily identify the source of the fishy smell on your dog, you should visit your veterinarian. Female dogs could have an internal infection, or any dog that smells like fish might have a UTI or yeast infection.
    • Something they ate. After any medical condition is ruled out, your veterinarian might recommend a change of diet. Some dog foods contain fish, especially salmon, and the fishy smell might be cured by switching to a different dog food or avoiding certain treats.

How to Get Rid of the Fishy Smells that Linger

Woman disgusted from a smell of a fish she holds in hand holds her nose standing in the kitchen at home

Once you know where the smell comes from and have gotten any medical conditions under control, you might still face the lingering smell of fish in your home, on your dog, or in your vehicle. Most pet care deodorizing products cannot completely eliminate the strong smell of fish from your dog or your carpet.

These tips will help you get rid of the fishy smell altogether:

    • Give your dog a bath as often as once a week.
    • Use pre-moistened dog wipes around your dog’s mouth and hindquarters daily.
    • Wash your dog’s bedding once per week.
    • Use a safe cleaning and odor-eliminating solution designed to remove strong pet odors.

  • How to Get Rid of Smoke Smells in Your Home

Although it may appear to be harmless, cigarette smoke contains many harmful compounds and can quickly invade every single surface in your home. What’s worse, smoke can persist, resulting in having to smell it whenever you enter a room. Is there any way to really get rid of smoke smells in your home? Yes; we’ll reveal how.

    Solutions That Can Remove Smoke

ashtray with cigarette on a reflecting surface of a glass table

There are a wide variety of ways to remove the smoke smell from your home; it just depends on how much effort you want to put into it. So here are some tried and tested methods, from hardest to easiest.

    Elbow Grease

Woman cleaning with a spray detergent

One method for removing smoke is as effective now as it ever was: plain old washing and scrubbing with some baking soda, peroxide, and vinegar solution. Baking soda remains an ideal abrasive and effective room freshener. Peroxide uses the power of hydrogen to eliminate odors as it safely brightens. Vinegar is yet another effective way to remove smoke.

When mixed together in equal parts, these ingredients can be used to remove both smoke smells and those yellow stains from walls, ceilings, and even upholstered furniture. For carpeting, sprinkle baking soda and wait 10 to 15 minutes before vacuuming.

    Dusting

Man cleaning table in home with cloth

Dusting certain items like knick-knacks in your home can also help. This is because when smoke residue is released into a room, it settles onto every single surface. Paying attention to small decorative pieces can have a big impact.

    Steam

Janitor removing dirt from sofa cushion with steam cleaner, closeup

Steam cleaning is another terrific way to deep clean and disinfect furniture and other soft surfaces in your home that may have been invaded by smoke odor. Handheld steamers are available in every size.

To clean, simply fill the steamer with water, hold it a few inches away from the surface, and move it slowly across, up or down. If you prefer, you can also add some lavender, citrus, or another fragrant essential oil to the water for some extra cigarette smell fighting power if your machine okays its use.

    Do the Laundry

brother and sister doing laundry at home

For clothing and other items that have become smoky, a trip through the washing machine and dryer can eliminate the smell of smoke.

Instead of using high-perfume detergents, consider adding some cleaning vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to wash water along with natural detergent (like soap nuts) to help eliminate smells without added chemicals.

In the dryer, a few drops of lavender and citrus essential oils on a clean cloth is a simple dryer sheet that adds chemical-free scent.

    New Filters

Air purifier on wooden floor in comfortable home.

If you have an air purifier system or furnace in your home, their filters can both trap and redistribute smelly smoke particles whenever those systems turn on. Swapping out those old air filters for new ones will make all the difference to your home’s overall freshness.

    Open the Windows

Woman opening window curtains at home in morning

Allowing fresh air and sunlight into your home by opening the windows is one of the easiest ways to get rid of smoke smell. Combined, the sun and air offer their own natural cleaning power.

It can help to keep the windows open as you clean to allow smoke particles to exit and fresh air to enter. You might also consider placing smoky items outside to remove odors.

Banish Smoke Smell the First Time, Every Time

man holding smoking a cigarette in hand

If you think that all of the above smoke removal methods seem like a lot of work, you would be correct! Thankfully, there’s another method that doesn’t require you to do anything other than open a container.

    The Power of Cl02

Cl02, otherwise known as chlorine dioxide, is a safe, powerful, and efficient eliminator of unwanted odors; just release it into the air, and the smells are gone. How is this possible? Cl02 gas quickly degrades in the presence of air. A byproduct of this degrading process is the release of oxygen, which immediately evicts smells from both hard and soft surfaces.

The benefits of Cl02 don’t stop there; even after it’s finished getting rid of smoke and other smells, it continues to degrade into saline solution, which is completely harmless and environmentally friendly to boot.

    The Challenge

Cl02 is a popular choice for industry because it is capable of eliminating odors from large industrial spaces. Unfortunately, this is because large-scale applications were the only possibility. Now there is a way to get all of the benefits of Cl02 for your home.

Get Rid of Smoke Forever with Room Shocker from Biocide Systems

  • How to Get Rid of Skunk Smell on a Dog

Your dog’s hunting instinct is backed by millions of years of evolution, allowing them to sniff out just about any animal, but rooting out a skunk will more often than not result in getting sprayed. Knowing what to do when your dog is sprayed will save you lots of time and money on dog shampoo.

    Don’t Let Them Come Inside

Young caucasian couple with dog holding our first home blackboard at new house smelling something stinky and disgusting

At the first detection of skunk spray, probably the most important thing to do, and the most effective way to keep skunk smell from getting into your home, is to keep your dog from coming inside.

Skunk spray is a very effective defense mechanism because of its strength. Not only is skunk spray oily, but compounds called thioacetates can keep that spray smell strong for up to one year! If you can smell it, that means the molecules are being released into the air. If this occurs in your home, those molecules will settle and remain on every surface.

Tip: Wear rubber gloves when handling your dog to prevent spray from getting on your hands.

    Spot Treat, Don’t Soak

    Veterinarian checking dog's eye

Your first instinct may be to soak your dog in water or tomato juice, but neither of these are good ideas because:

    • Skunks will often spray into a predator’s eyes, nose, and face first
    • Water can make skunk spray compounds much stronger and harder to remove
    • Tomato juice will only mask, not eliminate skunk spray

The best things to do are:

    1. Check your dog’s eyes for redness and watering and flush them with cool water.
    2. Examine your dog for spots of strongest odor—these will be where they were sprayed initially. Address these spots first.

Make and Apply a De-Skunking Mixture

    Baking soda in jar

Skunk sprays occur quickly and unexpectedly, making it unlikely that you’ll already have a pet shampoo for skunk odor on hand. These skunk spray recipes can be made in minutes using products you probably already have in your kitchen and medicine cabinet.

    Recipe 1:

    1 tsp liquid dish soap

    ¼ cup baking soda

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide (no stronger)

Combine ingredients in a full bucket of water.

    Recipe 2:

    2 parts water

    1 part apple cider vinegar

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle.

    Method

Regardless of the mixture you’re using, you’ll want to work quickly, one section at a time.

    1. Keeping rubber gloves on, rub whatever mixture you’ve made into your dog’s fur, ensuring their entire coat is treated. Caution: never allow your dog to lick either mixture or allow it to get into their eyes.
    2. Leave the mixture to sit for 20 minutes.
    3. Wash your dog thoroughly with de-skunking shampoo, rinsing from front to back, and then down.
    4. Towel dry thoroughly.

You may need to repeat the entire process until the smell is completely eliminated.

Tip: If skunk oil gets on clothes, wash with regular laundry detergent and hydrogen peroxide in cold water.

Another Way to Remove Skunk Smell

    Striped Skunk

Although the above recipes have worked for dog owners, they may not work the same way for every situation. For example, both vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are well-known skin irritants, and so they aren’t recommended for pets with sensitive skin.

As well, if you share your property with several skunks, the above methods can become labor-intensive. Is there another odor remover that eliminates skunk spray from your dog’s coat the first time? The answer is yes.

Chlorine dioxide (Cl02) is a chemical compound that breaks down and oxidizes odors. Because it degrades very quickly into saline solution, Cl02 is completely safe and non-toxic to humans, pets, and the environment.

    Where to Get Cl02

In the past, chlorine dioxide was only able to be used on an industrial scale. This is because it wasn’t possible to apply it over small areas. As well, there was no way to make it instantly or on an as-needed basis.

We have developed a way to make Cl02 available on a small scale. We are Biocide Systems, and our innovative technology allows you to completely eliminate skunk smell from your dog, guaranteed!
