How to Finally Get Rid of That Dog Smell!
Living with a dog usually means also living with their smell. While this may not seem like a problem, unpleasant odors can be absorbed into carpeting, floors, and furniture, causing your home to hold on to that dog smell. However, there are many things dog owners can do to get rid of it; here’s how.
What Is Dog Smell?
“Dog smell” refers to more than one odor. Every dog’s smell is different and unique, and higher body temperatures from running around or being in the heat can result in a stronger smell. Because dogs sweat through their foot pads, these odors can also be left on your flooring.
Dogs tend to be attracted to—and roll in—some of the stinkiest things on earth, including poop from other animals. This can also be a source of dog smell, as can altered body odor from what they eat.
Being in heat can also have a lot to do with dog smell being in your home. While it’s normal for female dogs to smell differently when in heat, these changes can cause pretty bad smells year-round when they get into your furnishings.
These are just a few of many reasons for dreaded “dog smell.” So what can you do to get rid of it?
Ways to Get Rid of Dog Smell
How many ways are there to get rid of dog smell? More than a few; from bathing and baking soda to steam and vinegar, all of these can help you eliminate dog smell from your home.
Give Them a Bath
Bathing your dog can eliminate a lot of odors that like to cling to their bodies. It’s easy to tell when your dog needs a bath because they will smell like it! It might not be so easy to get them into the tub, however!
If you do, use a mild shampoo made for dogs, and ensure they’re completely dry to avoid creating a breeding ground for odor-emanating yeast and mold. Regular brushing will keep their skin and fur clean and healthy, too.
Neutralize with Baking Soda
You may have placed some baking soda in the refrigerator to absorb odors, but it also works when placed in bowls that are set around your home. You can also sprinkle baking soda onto soft surfaces like furniture and carpeting and leave it to sit for several hours. Just vacuum to remove.
Get Steamed
Steam cleaning is a great way to kill odor-causing bacteria and germs all at the same time. A carpet steamer and some solution can be enough to pull dog smell out of carpeting, hard floors, and furniture. Have the steamer but no solution? White or apple cider vinegar and water make a great odor-fighting team.
Wash Their Stuff
If your dog is spoiled with toys, a cushy bed, and other necessities that are washable, throwing them into the laundry with some unscented, natural laundry detergent can do a lot to improve the smell in your home and get rid of doggy smell. Washing your dog’s bedding and other items in hot water will kill odor-causing bacteria.
Freshen the Air
It’s a good idea to open the windows and allow for some air flow to help send doggy odors packing. You can also mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle while the windows are open, and shake well before spraying as many hard and soft surfaces as possible.
Vinegar and water make an effective chemical-free cleaning and deodorizing solution that can be used anywhere in your home, including on floors to remove unwanted house smells. Changing out furnace or air purifier air filters can also rid your home of odor.
Essential oils like lavender can give your home a chemical-free scent, but be sure to ask your vet before using them. These are highly concentrated oils that can have potential negative effects on your dog’s sensitive system.
Use Chlorine Dioxide
Any of the above methods can be effective at removing dog odors from your home, but you may have found yourself having to try them again and again in order to keep dog smell at bay.
Chlorine dioxide (Cl02) is a gas. When released into the air, Cl02 reacts with oxygen and degrades quickly into harmless saline solution. Yet that’s not all; when chlorine dioxide gas hits the air, it obliterates every odor for good.
Industrial cleaning services have used Cl02 to eliminate odors in factories, but the amount of gas released each time wasn’t able to be controlled. Fortunately, innovation has provided a way to make your home smell better once and for all with Cl02 whenever you need it.
A Revolutionary Dog Odor Removal System
DoggiCLEEN from Biocide Systems is great news for any pet parent because it’s completely safe for your dog. So safe, in fact, that it can be sprayed directly onto your dog’s hair.
How does this amazing product work? The secret is in the molecules; chlorine dioxide molecules have an opposing electrical charge. This allows them to remove the electrons from dog smell molecules. Then, once Cl02 reacts with oxygen, those electrons—along with the odor—are destroyed.
