A Dog Sprayed by a Skunk: Every Pet Owner’s Worst Nightmare
It’s a beautiful summer day and you’re sitting in your kitchen with a glass of lemonade, enjoying the warm weather. Suddenly, the family dog bursts in through the doggie door. Under normal circumstances you’d be more than pleased to see your pet, but this time you notice an atrocious odor: a dog sprayed by a skunk! This is never a pleasant situation, but most pet owners will have to deal with it at some point in their dog’s life.
Once your dog has the skunk odor on them and traipses through your home, you’ll also need to remove skunk odor from house to completely get rid of skunk smell. Because of this, it’s vital that you corral your dog to a small area as soon as you smell the skunk on him. Best of all, try to keep him outside so you won’t have to deal with the skunk problem inside as well as out. Unfortunately, this isn’t always an option. A good way to avoid having to get rid of skunk smell is by understanding why a skunk sprays in the first place.
Skunks are nocturnal animals, meaning they roam around at night, particularly around twilight, and mainly sleep during the day. Because they’re nocturnal, they have excellent hearing and a strong sense of smell, but not very good sight. When a skunk is frightened suddenly, it will first attempt different displays in an attempt to ward off the predator. If this doesn’t work, bombs away! The skunk sprays out oily secretions made up of various sulfur compounds, creating the pungent rotten egg smell we all recognize.
Help avoid having your dog sprayed by a skunk by not letting him wander in to wooded areas alone, and by keeping a close eye on him when he’s outside, especially when it’s starting to get dark out. Keep skunks away from your property by making sure to close garbage cans securely and not leave food out, including bird seed. If, despite your best efforts, you still end up with a skunk-covered pet, try our doggiCLEEN Skunk Spray. This is an odor remover, not simply an odor masker, which is what typical household remedies like vinegar and tomato juice do. They may initially get rid of skunk smell, but once your pet gets wet the odor will return.
A good idea for all pet owners is to order our doggiCLEEN Skunk 911 Home Kit before you have any skunk problems, making sure it’s on hand if and when the time comes. The doggiCLEEN Skunk 911 Home Kit contains doggieCLEEN Skunk Spray for removing skunk odor from the dog and also roomSHOCKER Quick Release in order to remove skunk odor from house.
